Interim Paper

The purpose of this paper is for you to integrate many of the readings and issues discussed in the class so far.

At this point in the semester, you should have at least started work on your final project .  In this paper, you will begin integrating the readings with your project.

Donald Schön described design as “a reflective conversation with materials.”   He describes this as an iterative process of going back and forth between the materials and constraints, on the one hand, and the emerging design on the other.   One of his examples is an architect trying to design a building to fit the contours of the land in a particular site.

Think of this paper as a reflective conversation with the readings.   Having read thoroughly, in this paper you’ll reflect on how the various readings will help (or fail to help)  with your potential project.  You’ll go back and forth between the readings and your project (however you’re defining it at this point).  How do the readings illuminate your project, and vice versa?

For example, what ethical and practical quandries are you likely to confront in dealing with people?  What do the readings have to say that will help you understand your situation and decide how to act?  In what ways might the readings and their recommendations be inadequate to YOUR situation, YOUR project?  If necessary, how might you better meet your situation, rooted in the readings but perhaps going beyond or even arguing with those authors?

Consider this a partial draft of your final paper.  We’ll be doing more readings and you’ll progress further in your project, but our readings and discussions should be helping guide your project.
