Set: SAFE EFFICIENT

Visual Language (VOICE)
Contrast of Space: 75% white space
Shape of Forms: Square 1×1″, Rectangle 2×1″, Rectangle 8×1″
Orientation of Forms: 90 degrees
Size of Forms: 1, 2, and 8 units
Placement of Form: center
Space between Forms: .75-3 inches

Objective Rules (assignment rules)
#1: vertical central axis
#2: forms mirrored on either side of center axis
#3: 2×1 and 1×1 squares may be used throughout
#4: other dimensions may only be used as center axis

Interpretation of Visual Language
What did you interpret to apply your rules?
Mirror left and right sides to center, with variability in center form (range from 1X1 to 8X1 for center axis)

Explain your process.
All of the compositions have at least one left and one right form and a center axis. The left and right forms are always 1×1 or 2×1. This maintains consistent vertical balance throughout the compositions. The vertical central axis varies in order to achieve hierarchy or emphasis.

Set: FIERCE DYNAMIC

Visual Language (VOICE)
Contrast of Space: 80% white space
Shape of Forms: Square 1×1″, Rectangle 2×1″
Orientation of Forms: 45 degrees or 90 degrees (per rules below)
Size of Forms: 1×1 or 2×1 with longer forms composed of these smaller forms
Placement of Form: along 45 degree axis from lower left to upper right
Space between Forms: .25 inches

Objective Rules (assignment rules)
#1: movement along 45 degree angle from lower left to upper right
#2: 45 degree axis line created through group of multiple forms at 1″ wide
#3: when 1×1 squares appear alone, they are oriented at 90 degrees
#4: when 1×1 squares appear with 2×1 rectangles, all forms are oriented to 45 degrees

Interpretation of Visual Language
What did you interpret to apply your rules?
I thought about the dynamic movement being from the lower left to the upper right. The 45 angle is sharp and decisive, which represents fierceness.

Explain your process.
Starting with a single square at the origin point of the movement (lower left) I added forms from there. When additional forms are added the distance between the forms previously present is split.

Set: WHIMSICAL DELICATE

Visual Language (VOICE)
Contrast of Space: 75% white space
Shape of Forms: Square 1×1″
Orientation of Forms: 30 degrees or 60 degrees
Size of Forms: size should be equal, larger forms can be created by placing two 1×1 squares near each other but not completely touching
Placement of Form: surrounding and radiating out from the center
Space between Forms: forms are generally close, .25-.5″ unless more space is used for emphasis

Objective Rules (assignment rules)
#1: Movement radiates out
#2: two forms with a sliver of white space should be treated as one group or form
#3: movement is subtle and constrained
#4: no more than two squares should be at 90 degrees
#5: no more than two squares should be at 45 degrees

Interpretation of Visual Language
What did you interpret to apply your rules?
The angled squares on the top are the characters, for hierarchy only one of them can have the attention, they are playful and jaunty in their movement. The movement is smaller, more diminutive than the dramatic movement in the fierce and dynamic set

Explain your process.
I started with four shapes balanced in a diamond. From there two of the shapes became the characters (because I see whimsical as playful and having a more lively human or animal quality). These characters play around the base of the squares oriented at 90 degrees.
