Recipe Box

Peace Corps Volunteer recipe cookbooks – crowdsourced from 51 years, over 100 countries, and more than 200,000 Volunteers.

Challenge

Collect, synthesize, and share the collected Volunteer-produced cookbooks from every Peace Corps post.

Background

Volunteers spend a great deal of time cooking, eating, adapting to local environments, and teaching nutrition education. As a result, nearly every Volunteer community uses, adapts, and contributes to a locally crowdsourced cookbook. These cookbooks have been passed from Volunteer to Volunteer, first via photocopied pages and notes, then CD-ROMs, then USB Drives, now the Internet.

Volunteers, friends, and family have long recognized the value in consolidating these efforts and producing not only a comprehensive cookbook, but an ongoing database and platform that allows users to add, modify, browse, and search for this cookbook information.

Assets

  • A sample of documents (200Mb ,123 files) from various Peace Corps countries that include PDFs, Word documents, and others.
