Make a Short Video

Make a 2-to-3-minute video with sound. We will view these in class.  It should require some editing — for example, a longer video that you cut down to 3 minutes.  Better yet, a variety of shots, angles.

If you can, add a separate soundtrack. This could be in addition to the sound on the film, or instead of it. For example, you might have a video of someone speaking, but lead in and out with music.  Or have only music as a soundtrack.

Post your video where you want — the only requirement is that everyone in the class can see it.

You can post videos on YouTube or Vimeo such that the only people who can see them are people you invite — e.g., Vimeo lets you send out a URL and, if you wish, a password.

After class, Cindy asked some questions about the video assignment, so here is some clarification.he major goal is just to get you doing some shooting and editing — the 3 minutes doesn’t have to be a story (though that would be nice).  The video doesn’t have to be gorgeous.   (Smartphone video of your route to campus would be fine.)  The sound doesn’t have to be a separate sound track (though that would be nice).   Still images with sound do not qualify, because this is to get you shooting video.  You need to do some cutting,  and preferably splicing, just to get the experience of doing so.  If you don’t have a separate sound track, splicing might result in some audio weirdness — so take this into account in choosing where to cut and splice your video.

I realize that for those of you that aren’t able to attend the iMovie workshop and/or without iMovie, the editing part of this might be a problem.  (Though John has generously offered to meet with you separately for some help.)

Here’s an article listing some smartphone editing apps, including for Android. Here’s a tutorial on Windows Movie Maker 2 —  I don’t know whether it’s any good.  There are TONS of tutorials out there, on YouTube and other sites, so you’ll have no problem finding tutorials on iMovie or WMM (whatever version you have).  Please do share with the class good ones that you find.
