It’s very useful to volunteer as a subject — for good studies and bad ones!  To see how they do it (whoever “they” are) and experience user research from the user end.

Google user experience research (don’t know how current this is)

Craigslist usually has lots of focus groups on various topics, but also user research. Probably classified under “community > volunteers” but search widely.  Can range from big companies who do it well to someone’s term paper.
