YAKAP is an ICT platform enhancing community-building and outreach of domestic worker organizations
In order to decide on the best way to serve the nonprofit, we began with a mix of generative and formative research.
Contextual Interviews with domestic workers
"I want to share my story and help others"
- Caregiver - Age 63
"Most caregivers work in very isolated situations - we want to reach out to them and help them learn that they have rights"
- FAJ Director
"This is a key puzzle-piece in solving grassroots organizing”
- NDWA Staff Member
There were 3 key goals we aimed to achieve in the design of Yakap:
1) mobility and flexibility 2) ease of onboarding and 3) ease of maintenance.

Yakap in Action
We designed Yakap to be an SMS service that would be used by FAJ to connect with its constituents both current and new. The core use case for the system is to allow a potential new member to seek help or support with a issue they are facing and for the leaders of the organization to be able to help the potential member with the information and resources.
Send out broadcasts to domestic workers in the area
Domestic workers can text-in for questions and concerns
Organizers can select members to respond to and have a one on one conversation with them
