Halloween!

Photo op!

Part of being a good media-maker/storyteller is recognizing and taking advantage of a situation that arises.  Halloween offers a lot of potential.  Lots of visually-interesting things are happening, and people are  receptive to having pictures/video made — after all, they dress up to be seen! And Halloween events have certain moods — scary, celebratory, humorous…many possibilities.

But it’s also fast-moving and time-limited.  You have to act in the moment.  People are moving. Conditions are changing.

You might position yourself someplace and record whatever and whoever passes through; follow a group around; or go to an event. Or….whatever.

Make some sort of media for the class to view/hear that conveys some of the mood of Halloween.  (Some sort of narrative would be better yet.) You’ll have limited time to work, so this doesn’t have to be elaborate, but it should be good quality.  Do any or all of the following:

  • Make at least 5 images at one place or event that express either a single mood or a range of moods
  • Edit together several short pieces of video (or edit down one long video, but with cuts)
  • Put together an audio piece that conveys the feel of Halloween — again, combine several elements.

Have fun with this!
