Visual and Multimedia Narratives

Single-image stories: Laforet, Vincent. 2012. Visual stories : behind the lens with Vincent Laforet.  Berkeley, Calif.: New Riders.  Excerpts in dropbox.  Photojournalists often try to encapsulate a story in a single image.  There’s a separate Word file in Dropbox with the image URLs.  (For some reason, converting that page to PDF kills the links.)

Eisner, Will. 2008. Graphic storytelling and visual narrative : principles and practices from the legendary cartoonist.  New York: W.W. Norton. Classic.  Excerpts scanned and in Dropbox. 10/4

Added 10/5: just came across this nice description of the photo essay by David Wells.

The following are all short, all from Nieman Storyboard

  •  Visual Journalism — especially the following — look at the variety of media he shows.
    •  Ed Kashi, Multimedia Adds New Dimensions to the Art of Storytelling.  ” From a book to a Web site, from a series of photographs to a digital flipbook, my work—and that of many of my colleagues—is looking anew at the long-standing notion that it is the task of a photographer to capture a decisive moment In these three multimedia projects, I have been able to tell visual stories in more dimensions and with greater authenticity. This enables me to give a bigger voice to my subjects while experimenting with new forms of self-expression.”
  • Voices – audio and video give you voices to choose from to tell your story, to ‘sculpt’
  • Endings — every story needs a good resolution; write the resolution first?
  • Characters – while he’s mostly talking about text, most of these recommendations apply to video/audio/photography as well — where you often have the challenge of not being able to describe your characters in the 3rd person.
  • Story, interrupted: why we need new approaches to digital narrative by Pedro Monteiro

Added 10/8:   KDMC tutorials These are good — and there are a lot of them. For this class:
