Intro to STS

Sismondo, S. (2008). Science and technology studies and an engaged program. In: Hackett, E. J., & Society for Social Studies of Science. (2008). The handbook of science and technology studies (3rd ed.). Cambridge, Mass.: MIT Press; 13-32.  (Hereafter Handbook of STS.)

Note: we’ll read a number of articles from this handbook; it can be purchased as a print or ebook from MIT Press.  It is worth buying if you’re interested in pursuing STS further.  Most chapters are relatively short but with enormous numbers of references. We’ll be scanning as needed.

Sismondo emphasizes the “science” in STS; this reflects in part the history of the field, in which science was the initial emphasis; and, in part, his own interests.
