UC Berkeley’s Digital Health Hackathon was started in 2010 out of a passion to use technology to change peoples’ lives and try to tackle some of the most difficult problems in healthcare.

Building on the success of years prior, the event continues to grow and is a prominent fixture on the calendar at UC Berkeley, attracting attention across the Bay Area.

To illustrate some of our past successes, we’ve compiled some highlights from previous events to give you an idea of what you can expect!

Want to build apps that change lives?

Don’t miss Hacking Health – UC Berkeley’s hackathon focused on digital health!

Imagine changing how we care for our health with tools that motivate people to stay healthy, help patients and doctors connect, or predict who will get sick so we can care for them proactively.

We invite you to work towards a more connected and transparent digital health ecosystem at UC Berkeley’s second annual Hacking Health – September 21-22, 2012, at UC Berkeley’s Skydeck accelerator. You’ll be amazed at what can be built in a day!

Last year, solutions from the event included personalized health forecasting leveraging Practice Fusion’s research database, mobile therapeutics for tinnitus, streamlined PHR access for trauma centers, simplified advance directives, chronic disease online communities, concierge medical tourism, integrated hospital capital equipment solutions, and more.

For highlights from last year’s event, please click here.

This year, you’ll join professionals and students of all stripes – coders, builders, designers, marketeers, health experts and clinicians — from across the UC Berkeley and UC San Francisco campuses and the Bay Area community. Design, build and pitch solutions in 24 hours or less. You bring the talent, the passion, and the need for change. We’ll bring the rest.

More Information

Friday 4:00pm: Optional inspiration and ideas from CITRIS, design firms, startups that have made it and VCs that have watched many crash and burn (and have helped a few succeed).

Friday 6:00pm: Ideation Happy Hour.  Come prepared with your 60-second elevator pitch!  Teams will form on Friday evening.

Saturday 8:30am: All-day coding / designing / building.

Saturday 6:00pm: All-star judging panel will review team creations.

Food and drinks will be provided. You will be swimming in data sets and APIs to help you on your quest to improve our healthcare.

Judging Criteria

  1. Impact: What problem does it address?  What is the scale of that problem?
  2. Product Viability: Does the technology match the problem addressed?  Would people use it?
  3. Progress and Execution: How much did the team accomplish in a day?
  4. Business Viability: Are there insurmountable competitors?  Barriers to entry? Can it make money? Will it find a customer base, etc.?  Business viability is least weighted for judging at this early stage, but you might want to start thinking about it.

We hope the teams you form will be as diverse as the opportunities in digital health.  There is no requirement about who you should work with, but all teams that want to pitch their demos on Saturday must:

1) Have at least three (3) people.
– Remember, one of the judging criteria is progress, so larger, organized teams might have an advantage.

2) Have at least one (1) person affiliated with either UC Berkeley or UCSF (student, professor, staff, alum, etc.).

Please note: the time you have to pitch will depend on how many teams we have.  There will likely be ~5 minutes for your demo and 5 minutes for Q&A.  Your set up time will be included in your demo time.  There will be a max of 15 demo slots, and we’ll start registering teams for demo order starting on Saturday at 4:30 PM.  The demo order is first come, first serve, so if you want to be guaranteed a slot, sign up early!

We look forward to seeing you at Hacking Health!
